The Great Lakes Chapter held it's final VJP of 2026 in Frederic, MI

The Northern Michigan VJP has officially returned! By all accounts, it had been quite some time since a test was last conducted in this region, making this event especially meaningful for participants and supporters alike. The weekend was a complete success, with all entered dogs passing the VJP.

A great deal of preparation took place behind the scenes to make this event possible. Special recognition goes to Test Coordinator Will Good, whose efforts were invaluable. Will secured access to the private grounds, established strong relationships with the landowners, and helped ensure the event ran smoothly. His dedication made the role of Test Director significantly easier.

The test was further strengthened by an outstanding judging panel: Dan Carlisle, Ron Figler, and Lori Tyler. Their professionalism, efficiency, and willingness to educate handlers throughout the process were widely appreciated. Many participants commented on how much they valued the judges’ clear explanations of each testing subject. This was particularly encouraging, as many first-time handlers attended the event with enthusiasm and excitement.

We also extend sincere thanks to Rapid Wings Pheasant Farm for supplying pheasants, as well as Rooster Ranch for generously donating additional birds for the test.

Appreciation is also due to chapter members Josh Logan (Chapter Director of Testing) and Jim Smith, who played an instrumental role in bird placement for the pointing portion of the test. To all those who assisted by pushing rabbits for the dogs and judges, thank you for your hard work and support.

One of the most unique and memorable aspects of this VJP was the use of snowshoe hares for the tracking portion of the test. The tracking was conducted on a well-maintained 40-acre enclosed property dedicated exclusively to snowshoe hares, with no cottontails present. The property owner, Aaron Vineyard, has created exceptional habitat conditions that allow the hares to thrive. Each dog was given the opportunity to work two hares, and the quality of the tracking performances was remarkable. The results demonstrated the impressive track work that can be achieved under these conditions.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the quality of the grounds, the tremendous support from volunteers and sponsors, and most of all, the handlers who brought their dogs to participate. Their dedication and sportsmanship made this event a success.
