Hastings, MI HZP Test Results (Sept. 13 & 14, 2025)

The Great Lakes Chapter held its first HZP of 2025 at our Hastings, MI location on September 13–14.

We were privileged to host the test at the outstanding water site of Joe and Kim Beach, whose hospitality made the weekend a great success.

Field Work

Each morning began in fresh search and pointing fields with knee-high grass—ideal conditions for both judges and dogs. The cover allowed pheasants to hide well, yet handlers and spectators could clearly view the dogs’ work. A light rain on Saturday morning did little to slow the enthusiasm, with dogs continuing to perform admirably.

The fur and feather drags took place in two well-prepared cut hay fields, providing excellent grounds for tracking and retrieving.

Water Work

After a delicious lunch of venison sloppy joe provided by Joe Beach, participants moved to the water portion of the test. The ducks laid some long water tracks, giving handlers and their dogs a true challenge. The dogs rose to the occasion, demonstrating determination and some truly impressive water work.

Thanks and Acknowledgements

The chapter would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all who made the weekend possible.

Judges: Shane DeFord, Jim Wilson, and Rich German
Test Director: Jim Smith
