Hillsdale, MI HZP Test Results (September 16 & 17, 2023)
The Great Lakes Chapter held it's second 2023 HZP at some new test grounds in the Hillsdale, MI area September 16 & 17, 2023.
The field search, pointing work, and retrieve of a freshly shot bird was accomplished at Mizac Farms. The furred game drags, and the water events were preformed at the Leaping Water facility. The two test sites were about a twenty minute drive apart.
We would like to sincerely thank the owners of each of the properties for their support, and willingness to work with us. They are both dog training grounds, so they understand us dog people.
For the first time at a GLC test, (possibly east of the Mississippi) we used the optional retrieve of a freshly shot bird instead of a feathered game drag. We had limited drag fields, so we needed to use that option. All the dogs performed that event with no problems.
The weather fully cooperated both days. We were able to have a perfect lunch on Saturday in a quiet glade, thanks to Tom Shook, and Marty Ryan. On Sunday, we pressed on testing through midday, then had a late lunch on Marty's patio at his residence.
We need to give a big thanks to the judges, Marty Ryan, Dan Crusey, and Ron Figler. Ron judged at our test on the way home from judging and hunting in N.D. Will Good missed a couple of hunting days to apprentice on Sunday. Barry Pickens jumped in to help as a bird handler and shooter.
Of course we must always recognize the time, and training the handlers put into there dogs. Both property owners welcomed us back, so it's possible we could hold another HZP there in 2024.
